COOU UPDATE

A recent news report of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University chapter has disclosed that the Union’s chairman of the institution – Prof Okey Aniebo revealed that his life and job are being threatened.

MYTECH from report gathered that the chairman of the Union made the shocking statement during the course of ASUU Zonal leadership visit to the University which was led by Prof Ike Odumegwu.

“My life and job were both threatened to be in danger due to my refusal of backing out from the national ASUU strike” – he stated.

Making clarifications on this issue he further stated that the varsity management and authorities directed the lecturers to suspend the strike and begin duties but he insisted that the institution will carry on with the strike.

The Unions chairman stated, “The institution COOU has certain peculiarities that made it imperative for it to key into the national strike”.

“Don’t be surprised if I’m sacked any moment now. My life and job are in danger, but if they kill me or sack me another ASUU executive will spring up in this university.

The truth about the matter is that the strike action is not about or for Prof Aniebo rather it’s about saving our public universities from destruction.

Looking at the public varsities, we don’t have the resources to train our children abroad or in private universities, public universities are our only hope to give our children a quality education” – Prof. Okey stated.

“The Union has helped the university in so many ways. Most of the lecturers, without ASUU could have died.

Adding to that, most of the projects in the university are products of ASUU’s struggle yet the management is mandating us to abandon the national union. If we abandon ASUU, we’ll die”.

In conclusion Prof. Okey disclosed that the varsity have lots of internal problems that are yet to be attended to and there’s no budget monitoring committee at the university which led to waste of resources.
